Guest review

Morey is the complete and highly professional guide, not only for his in-depth knowledge of Koshu wine and his connections with its winemakers. He is also an excellent conversationalist and can share unique insights on life as a Koshu local. I find Morey to be a genuine person and someone deeply passionate about Japan’s wine, nature, temples, and culture.

Guest review

Morey is very knowledgeable about the wineries yet still retains approachability so that anyone from expert to novice can enjoy the wines of Yamanashi. The service is also very personal, taking into account how we like to enjoy wine and curating it to best fit us. The wineries were varied between large and small, but each with their own story. I cannot wait to do it again to see the wineries we missed.

Your Nagano Wine Tour, Curated Just for You

With Winery Tours Japan, enjoy Nagano as a private day tour, travel solo, or combine it with Yamanashi over several days. Premium tastings and other enhancements can be arranged when available.

Your Private Nagano Wine Tour Experience

The standard route concentrates on Chikuma, Tomi and Komoro rather than spending the day driving between distant wine districts. A typical itinerary balances three or four visits, a good lunch and time to appreciate the vineyards. Exact wineries depend on opening days and reservations.

Established Wineries and Distinctive Nagano Wines

Komoro’s Manns Wine winery and its Solaris wines are one example of the region’s established winemaking tradition. Depending on the route and reservations, we may also consider other producers around Tomi, Chikuma and nearby Ueda, including Château Mercian’s Mariko winery.

Expect to encounter styles such as Chardonnay, Merlot and other European varieties alongside wines that reflect individual vineyards and winemakers. No particular producer or bottle is promised in advance.

Small Producers and Younger Winemakers

Part of Nagano’s appeal is its community of independent growers and newer, small-scale wineries. I look for opportunities to introduce guests to contrasting producers and approaches, not simply the biggest tasting rooms.

Many small wineries make limited quantities and cannot accept casual visitors. Where a visit is possible, I coordinate it in advance and leave time for an unhurried tasting and conversation.

A Relaxed Day with Tastings and Lunch

We typically leave Yamanashi around 8:00 a.m. for the drive into Nagano. During the day, I handle transport, Japanese-language coordination and planned tasting arrangements, with lunch chosen around the winery route.

Return is generally in the evening, often around 7:00–8:00 p.m., depending on the final itinerary, traffic and any optional visits. This is a full-day excursion, not a short local tasting.

Why travel with a private local guide? The winery appointments, driving and Japanese-language arrangements are managed for your own group, so everyone can enjoy the tastings without self-driving afterward.

Optional Whisky and Extended Wine Routes

These choices are discussed when planning your private itinerary. They are not additional stops automatically included in the standard Chikuma–Tomi–Komoro day.

Komoro Distillery

For guests interested in Japanese whisky, a reserved tour and tasting at Komoro Distillery may be possible. This generally replaces some winery time and is quoted once the selected distillery experience is confirmed.

Takayama Wine Area

A possible extension north toward Takayama Village and its mountain vineyards. It adds substantial driving time, so we would adjust the winery schedule and quotation rather than promise every core-area stop.

Shiojiri Wineries

Shiojiri’s Kikyogahara area offers a different wine-growing history and established wineries, particularly known for Merlot. Its distance usually makes a Shiojiri-focused or substantially revised day more sensible than adding it to the normal route.

Any distillery experience, premium tasting or extended driving is subject to availability and the final agreed price.

What’s Included and What Is Not Included

Before booking, you receive a clear quotation for the agreed route and scheduled visits. The core tour includes the guiding and experiences listed below.

Included in Your Agreed Tour

  • Private itinerary planning and guiding by Morey
  • Bilingual English–Japanese interpretation and winery coordination
  • Private transport from the agreed Yamanashi meeting point and during the Nagano tour
  • Standard wine tastings scheduled in the confirmed itinerary
  • One seasonal lunch during the touring day

Not Included or Quoted Separately

  • Travel to the Yamanashi meeting point from Tokyo or elsewhere
  • Accommodation and personal purchases, including wine bottles
  • Komoro Distillery tours or tasting options unless specified in the quotation
  • Takayama or Shiojiri extensions, premium tastings and other custom upgrades unless agreed

The final winery list and any optional visits are confirmed before the tour. Specific wineries, staff meetings and special tastings depend on reservations.

Meeting in Yamanashi and Travel Arrangements

The tour starts from an agreed local meeting point in Yamanashi / Koshu Valley (Katsunuma–Enzan area). We usually aim for an early departure to give the wineries enough time, and I confirm the exact meeting and return arrangements when planning your route.

Guests coming from Tokyo can reach Yamanashi by Limited Express train and arrange accommodation independently if needed. Tokyo pickup and accommodation are not included in the standard excursion.

Personally Curated and Guided by Morey

I’m Morey, the bilingual English-speaking local guide behind Winery Tours Japan. Based in Yamanashi, I personally organize and guide these private trips, drawing on my own visits to Nagano wineries and vineyards. I coordinate appointments in Japanese and adjust the pace to the guests and producers, rather than selling places on a fixed coach itinerary.

Nagano Wine Country in Brief

Nagano’s higher-elevation valleys produce a wide range of Japanese wines, with Merlot, Chardonnay and other varieties reflecting different sites and producers. The prefecture has five recognized wine-valley areas; our normal route focuses on the Chikumagawa Wine Valley, rather than trying to cover all of them in one day. For the wider geography, five wine valleys and regional grape varieties, read the Nagano section of our Japanese Wine Regions guide.
