Access

Most of the wineries we visit are located in the Katsunuma / Enzan wine-making area in Yamanashi, nestled in the beautiful Koshu Valley, just 90 minutes from Tokyo. This region is easily accessible by express train or highway bus from Shinjuku Station. For the fastest, most comfortable, and scenic journey, we highly recommend taking the Super Azusa or Kaiji express trains. These trains offer a relaxing ride with stunning views of the countryside and Mount Fuji as you travel through the mountains, arriving in the Koshu Valley in about 90 minutes.

While driving by car or van is an option, we advise against it due to Japan’s notorious traffic, which can add hours to your journey. Taking the express train not only saves you time but also ensures a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.

If you have any questions about getting to the Koshu Valley or need help planning your trip, feel free to reach out to us!

Koshu: the unique wine of Yamanashi

Yamanashi prefecture is the oldest and largest producer of Koshu wine in Japan. The Katsunuma region of the Koshu valley is the heart of Koshu wine making and grape cultivation in Yamanashi. With 71 wineries and 82 factories, the vignerons of Yamanashi produce over 300 different brands of Japanese wine. Koshu wine is the largest variety produced, followed by Muscat Bailey A and Delaware. Several European varieties account for about 5% of total Japan wine production in Yamanashi.

The flavour of Koshu

The white wine of Koshu is said to have some similarity to Savignon Blanc. Koshu is light in color, with subtle aromas of citrus and white peach. Koshu wine is produced using three methods: The first one is a clear and sharp wine made with the Sur lie method, the second is fuller and more rounded wine aged in oak barrels, and the third type is a uniquely flavored type of wine.
Koshu wine with its low alcohol and crisp acidity results in a taste that is delicate and subtle, and makes a nice pairing with Japanese cuisine that is inspired by fresh seafood, light meats and seasonal vegetables.
