Koshu: the unique wine of Yamanashi

Yamanashi prefecture is the oldest and largest producer of Koshu wine in Japan. The Katsunuma region of the Koshu valley is the heart of Koshu wine making and grape cultivation in Yamanashi. With 71 wineries and 82 factories, the vignerons of Yamanashi produce over 300 different brands of Japanese wine. Koshu wine is the largest variety produced, followed by Muscat Bailey A and Delaware. Several European varieties account for about 5% of total Japan wine production in Yamanashi.

The flavour of Koshu

The white wine of Koshu is said to have some similarity to Savignon Blanc. Koshu is light in color, with subtle aromas of citrus and white peach. Koshu wine is produced using three methods: The first one is a clear and sharp wine made with the Sur lie method, the second is fuller and more rounded wine aged in oak barrels, and the third type is a uniquely flavored type of wine.
Koshu wine with its low alcohol and crisp acidity results in a taste that is delicate and subtle, and makes a nice pairing with Japanese cuisine that is inspired by fresh seafood, light meats and seasonal vegetables.
